Big companies lift millions out of poverty through jobs

April 18, 2008

Despite the great work of social entrepreneurs, their ability to lift people out of poverty is relatively small. Scaling up successful ventures is a tough challenge.
The presence of big companies in poor countries may have a bigger impact by the jobs that are being created. An interesting article on this summarises it as follows:
“So, while advocates of responsible business should recognise, and applaud, the innovative efforts of social entrepreneurs, their work so far is a drop in the ocean compared with the huge potential of larger companies to contribute to lifting millions from poverty.”
Find the article here. It is a good read but it has one unfortunate mistake where it states that Unilever seems to be the only company that actually measures its economic and social contribution. As a reader of our work, you are aware that Heineken has executed Economic Impact Analyses in 5 countries. For more on this click here.
