Corporate life is no pacman game

April 28, 2008

Some people seem to experience corporate life as a game of pacman. One has to rush and run to score points. Be agile, think ahead, deal with other parties that want to (b)eat them. The trick is to use intuition and experience, be aggressive and direct, yet have understanding and foresight on how things will evolve. But still, it seems to be inevitable that at one point the opposition wins.
Is this a fair reflection of corporate life and how does sustainability fit in this picture? Sustainability will help to understand that corporate life doesn’t have to be like a pacman game. Don’t get yourself fooled into the one dimensional battle for short-term gains and heavy opposition. Business is not a zero sum game. Sustainability can contribute to the alignment of your long-term strategy with the interests of the parties you are dealing with and society at large. Taking time to understand their agenda, to reflect on how to balance interests and yet score points, is the way to go. Put simply; if you believe you are in a pacman game, it is unlikely that you have a sustainable business. Better to make a fundamental shift and change the rules of your game. How? Maybe you should call us?
