Electric cars: for the near future?

March 6, 2009

The Young Professionals Event of Triple Value, recently held for the third time, again proved to be a successful gathering. This time the group of young professionals in the field of sustainability joined a discussion with Willem van der Kooi, founder and co-owner of Electric Cars Europe (ECE). With this relatively new company, he strives for a drastic reduction of CO2 emissions by delivering cars that are hundred percent electric. The company claims that electric cars are ready for mass production and participating in today´s car infrastructure.

This view shows contrast with some of this week´s news about electric cars. The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency predicts that electric driving will become a real part of the Dutch society in the second half of this century (FD, 24 February 2009). It claims that electric cars are not yet user friendly. The battery is too expensive and recharging the battery takes too much time. And it will take a lot of time before there are recharging facilities in the streets. Car makers like Honda say there are more problems like safety in case of crashes (because of the size of the battery) and the availability of electricity and lithium for the battery (FD, 26 February 2009).

Next to electric driving there are alternatives which have the potential to replace conventional techniques, like hydrogen and bio fuels. Many car makers see electric driving as the ultimate end station in the transition to sustainable driving for the mass, but also say other solutions are needed until the technique is fully developed.

The discussion with young professionals did not result in conclusions on one winning technique, but there was consensus that the car industry will go through a great change in the coming years.

We all know that cars should be user and environment friendly. I really expect that car models in the future will be this type unlike this 1986-1992 VOLKSWAGEN CABRIOLET ENGINE COOLING FAN MOTOR RELAYS - STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS.
