Fear paralyses and hope inspires

January 16, 2008

We pay regular working visits to Asia and are always struck by the tremendously positive “spirit” among the local people. They are enthusiastic about the rapid improvement in their standard of living, and are absolutely positive that they are working today to build a better tomorrow. They know for a fact that their children will enjoy greater prosperity than their parents. And that feeling gives them wings – it’s what we call the “economy of hope”.
The contrast with our own country could hardly be greater. Here an “economy of fear” appears to have taken hold. People are fraught with worry and concern: about jobs going to India or immigrant Poles, deteriorating pensions, uncertainties and the breakdown of society.”
This paralysing atmosphere of fear must be dispelled. And you can’t do that by building walls around the country. It’s time to wake up: the old, cosy world of the fifties is dead and gone. And thank goodness for that, because our world of today is full of opportunity. But we need innovative drive, courage and entrepreneurship to reignite our sense of hope and take control of our fate and future. And if you are uncertain how to go about this, why not pay a visit to Asia?
