Lessons from tourism for any industry

May 23, 2008

This week’s Economist ((May 17th 2008) warns the (Asian) tourism industry for low cost mass oriented approaches. The ugliness of concrete high rising hotels and the noise and bad behaviour of the massive numbers of visitorsmay deteriorate the business case. Tourism in Europe (Costa’s in Spain, Greek islands) has learnt that no hotel developer protects the ancient site, the coral reef and the fresh water. However, if you destroy your heritage and scenery, you will come to regret it. Therefore planners in new markets should ask themselves where they want tourism to be in 20 years. Carve out your own niche. Anticipate increasing prosperity to boost the demand for scenery, a decent environment topped with history and culture. If you decide for mass tourism, this needs mass development but don’t pave paradise to put up a parking lot, warns The Economist.
In the case of tourism these warnings seem to be so obvious. However, a lot of people in other industries still fail to see that the same is true for their business. If you build your growth on exploiting the environment and abusing people and communities your future is clear (but doomed). One day you’ll desperately need a vacation, but you will not be able to afford that anymore. Do you want to know more about sustainable entrepreneurship?
