Tragedy of the committees

December 23, 2011

The tragedy of the commons is a dilemma arising from the situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource, even when it is clear that it is not in anyone's long-term interest for this to happen (Wikipedia). It is often referred to in relation to challenges of sustainable development, such as climate change and environmental protection.

In 2011 we have yet again seen another tragedy, that of the ‘committees’. It is epidemic. Be it the everlasting international dialogue on carbon reduction, or the EU countries who seem to be unable to deal adequately with the economic crisis. It is disturbing to see that international problems seem to be addressed through process instead of through focused action. A lack of leadership and the ability to transcend short-term self interest results in impasse and deadlocks. The insiders of these international dialogues seem to believe that as long as the discussion continues, they are on the right track. Going round and round. Meanwhile citizens, companies and NGO’s are frustrated by a the lack of real progress and the incapability of so-called decision makers.

One wish for 2012 will be that global problems will be solved through global solution. Please reduce fuzzy talk and hot air. No committee of commission should start meeting without being determined to achieve real results. All participants should take responsibility, otherwise meeting is useless.

I just remembered a statement (don’t know where I have picked it up): “look in every town or city, you will never find a statue for a commission or committee”.
