Rating agencies play an important role in how society perceives a company’s sustainability level. Arguably, the agencies are not always using the right indicators and outcomes are therefore not always representative. However, their influence cannot be ignored. Stakeholders will more highly esteem a company that is a sustainability leader of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), or has a full coverage of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) or a high ranking in the Dutch Transparantiebenchmark (DTB). A Rating Gap Analysis gives a company insight in its shortcomings and could help improve its score. This is especially relevant for companies that have made their variable compensation schemes dependent on sustainability indexes.
