Agilty never more important

3 november 2008

Where is the economy going? What are the consequences for the ESG-agenda when the economy shifts into recession? The answers are difficult to get since they concern the future. And it has become clear over the past months that predicting is an art which nobody truly masters. One thing is clear however: companies need to be agile to deal with high levels of insecurity and tough times (see also our introduction to Better than Brundtland).
I believe that the idea of being “in control” (in the sense of knowing exactly what is going on) is unfit for business today. The closest to being in control we will ever be is in that moment that we realise we're not, I once read. I agree. Businesses (CEO’s) can not sign for being in control. The best they can promise is that they understand the insecurities they have to deal with and that they make sure there their companies are agile and alert. Those companies that are anticipating not only the expected (known knowns and known unknowns) but also the unexpected (unknown unknowns) in the most adequate way, will be the winners. And they should not omit ESG from their radar screen. ESG will become ever more relevant. If you keep ESG impacts in the area of the “unknown unknowns” you will one day be more out of control than you should have been.

Best regards from the US. You are very right: keep a good eye on ESG! Good luck.
