Also for a sustainability dialogue it takes two to tango

1 december 2008

It is to be expected that sustainability and corporate governance will become directly connected in The Netherlands through inclusion of sustainability in the Dutch corporate governance code. See previous blog. A key point is that a company provides insight into its sustainability policy, including an explanation of and openness about any decision not to implement sustainability policy. Inclusion in the code results in an additional obligation for companies (although only to a level of current practices of front runners, so only laggards will be targeted). Given the relationship between a company and its stakeholders this is not only justified but useful to do.
The idea is that this information helps outside stakeholders to form an opinion about the quality of the company’s sustainability policy and the progress of the implementation. Based on this information a stakeholder can ask questions or start a dialogue. I believe stakeholders shouldn’t take this opportunity lightly. They should be clear about their sustainability policies and agenda (what do they think is of material importance?) and the way they want to interact. This is a basis on which a dialogue can take place. I hope that stakeholders will act on their agenda, because a dialogue requires two parties. It takes two to tango.
