“Co2 offsetts and knifing someone to death”
25 juni 2008
An interesting debate in the
FT these days on the energy crisis and Co2. In a letter to the editor professor
Jagdish Bhagwati makes an interesting observation on Co2 offsetts (FT June 25th “Crook cuts through energy crisis waffle but takes a step too far”). There is something wrong with the notion of maintaining a C02-intensive lifestyle while buying “offsets” elsewhere such as saving the rainforests.
Al Gore is reputed to do just this, claiming that his “carbon imprint” is zero. But says Bhagwati: “this is a bit like knifing him to death and then claiming that, because my wife is having a baby, my “population imprint” is zero!”
Less is more. I rest my case.
