CSR in EU competitiveness report will not inspire anyone

8 december 2008

Recently the 2008 European Competitiveness Report has been published. This report now contains a chapter on the links between CSR and competitiveness. While apparently this chapter is to be considered as an achievement (because it wasn’t there before) I don’t believe the content will inspire anyone. It basically is an academic overview of opinions and research on CSR over the last few years. Absolutely nothing new. Reading it is a drag. I couldn’t stop asking myself who are the writers addressing and what do they want to achieve with this?
Everybody who is interested in CSR will be disappointed about the content. People who know little about CSR will be asleep on page three.
The last conclusion the chapter draws is this; “The findings of this chapter support the argument that CSR can make a valuable contribution to the goals of the European Growth and Jobs Strategy, and should encourage more Member States, in cooperation with other stakeholders including employers’ organisations, to promote CSR as part of their national reform strategies. The Commission will continue to provide political impetus and practical support to all stakeholders engaged in CSR.”
Come on; it is 2008! Maybe you could have made such a statement 10 years ago, but not today.
The chapter does not provide me with a single reason to change my opinion on the way the EU is addressing CSR. Long on words, short on actions and progress. It is unlikely that this will change. But as we all know actions speak louder than words.
Therefore my advice to the EU is as follows. Stop claiming leadership on CSR and sustainability. But please (!) keep spending your time on writing chapters like this one. Because if you continue to spend your time on categorising and summarising what has already been published in the past, at least you can not spend your time on interventions that will hamper business to make progress on implementing CSR. Stay in your library studying the past, so you will not interfere with our future. OK?
