How the mighty fall

“How the mighty fall” is the latest book of
Jim Collins (well known from “Built to last” and “Good to Great”.) His timing is marvellous: everywhere around us we see (great) companies tumble. Every institution is vulnerable, no matter how great, Collins observes. On the basis of his research he presents a model of five stages of decline. The central part of the model: failing leadership. For example: hubris / arrogance, lack of discipline, denial of risk, neglecting grim facts, externalizing blame and inconsistency. Collins therefore concludes that decline is largely self-inflicted. “The path of recovery lies within our own hands. We are not imprisoned by our circumstances, our history or even our staggering defeats along the way. As long as we are never entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains.” Thus the catchy subtitle of the book “and why some companies never give in.”
Collins’ next book will be on the world around companies: what do to when that spins out of control? How to deal with turbulence? I’m looking forward to it, but I guess that again leadership will be the crucial differentiator. Hope it will also emphasise that the turbulence in the world around us, is not limited to first order financial and economic factors, but that it also relates to environmental and social challenges. Try to deal with that with poor leadership!
