Mind over matter

17 januari 2010

Economics is a mental construct that requires recalibration, Sander Tideman claims in his interesting book “Mind over matter”. He highlights several developments and new insights with respect to the relationship between economics, wellbeing and sustainability. Given the economic crisis this is the time to build on new scientific findings of other sciences (such as biology, psychology) to enrich economic analysis and policymaking. A better balance between efficiency and resilience is required. Economic models of the future will reflect a reality which is much closer to the “comprehensive totality of human experience”, Tideman claims. His elaborations on human needs and wants, well being and Gross National Happiness as launched by the government of Bhutan, are valuable input for the discussion on the economics of sustainability. Valuation of natural resources, inclusion of current ‘externalities’, and influencing consumer, corporate and investor behaviour towards a more sustainable direction will dominate any economic and sustainability debate in the next years. Sander Tideman has written an interesting book for anyone who wants to participate in that debate and contribute to a more sustainable (economic) system in practise.
