Social Economic Council and social economic action

23 april 2010

The Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER) has recenty published a draft report on sustainable growth. On “De Nationale Dialoog” Wouter Scheepens writes about his mixed feelings about this report. The analysis of the SER is thorough; who could not agree with the thesis that ‘business as usual’ is no option anymore, that sustainable growth is the way to go? However, whether the country should spend time on creating a national strategy or even a law on sustainability is debatable. As the SER notes, conflicts on interests and dilemmas are an inherent part of the dynamics of sustainability. Wouter states that it would be better to focus on practical solutions to real problems instead of designing yet another panoramic view of the future. The government should not try to lead the transition towards a sustainable economy, but facilitate it. Business as usual is no option, neither is government as usual.
