Supercorp and Zeitgeist

I found the book a good read. But from a content point of view this is not a book a I have been waiting for. In fact, a lot of the content is pretty straight forward for anyone who has been active in sustainable entrepreneurship or CSR, as I have been (and apparently Stern hasn’t). However, I can see that the book offers a lot of valuable insights for anyone who is still reluctant or (too!) late to appreciate the sustainability business case. In view of the academic credentials of Moss Kanter the book is definitely a strong endorsement for the view of sustainability promoters. Indeed the book captures the “Zeitgeist” of the emerging 21st century business. For example the strong potential synergy between financial performance and attention to community and social needs. The unique competitive advantage from embracing the values and expectations of a new generation professionals and the growth opportunities that result from stressing values and suppressing executive egos when seeking partners and integrating acquisitions.
I believe that capturing the Zeitgeist is the most important responsibility of business leadership. Bob Geldof has stated eloquently what happens if one neglects this;
“We have to recognise the Zeitgeist before it kicks our ass.”
