S&E Risk Assessment Tool for the Common Fund for Commodities
We supported the Common Fund for Commodities with a tailored Social & Environmental Risk Assessment Policy and Tool
The Common Fund for Commodities (‘CFC’) is an intergovernmental financial institution established within the framework of the United Nations. Since its establishment in 1989, CFC has more than 30 years of experience in agricultural commodity value chains as a technical assistance provider and as investor in SMEs in agricultural and forestry targeted impact funds. To further strengthen their S&E risk management, CFC engaged us to develop a customised tool tailored to the fund’s strategy and investment universe.
Leveraging our expertise in building bespoke policies, tools and software solutions, we developed a summary policy and tool that supports all E&S risk management activities in the fund’s pre-investment stages – including deal sourcing, clearance in principle, due diligence, and the identification of action plan items. Incorporating macro-level data, leading E&S frameworks, and industry guidance, the tool offers country and sector risks insights alongside detailed and sector-specific due diligence questionnaires. With automated processes and room for user input, it enables structured analysis while allowing for expert judgement.
The resulting tool empowers the fund’s S&E and investment teams to manage S&E risks more systematically and efficiently, streamlining the process for both CFC and prospective investees. Ultimately, it reinforces CFC’s commitment to responsible investments in agriculture and smallholder supply chains.
